This spiced syrup made with brown sugar is flavored with pumpkin pie spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and ginger.  Perfect for Fall desserts and drinks, add Bourbon or Rum to kick it up a notch.  Try it in this Spiced Old Fashioned cocktail

What is Pumpkin Spice?

Pumpkin spice is a mixture of five different spices used in preparing Pumpkin pie.  Although Some variations exist,  the most common mixture includes Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger, Cloves and Allspice. 

The ground spices are combined and sold as Pumpkin Spice. 

This spiced simple syrup recipe uses whole spices to infuse the simple syrup for a stronger flavor. 

Spiced Simple Syrup

Simple syrup infused with pumpkin pie spices for use in drinks and desserts
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Cooling Time 2 hours
Total Time 2 hours 20 minutes

Servings 1 cup

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Brown sugar light or dark
  • 1 cup Water
  • 3 sticks Cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp Nutmeg, grated
  • ½ inch Ginger, fresh
  • 1 tsp Cloves, whole
  • 1 tsp Allspice berries
  • ½ tsp Vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Put all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil stirring gently until sugar is dissolved. Let boil for 5 minutes then remove from heat.
  • Let the syrup cool about 2 hours and strain into a storage container.
